The Project

THE PROJECT KJØGE MINI-TOWN

To keep for future generations a picture of, what Køge looked like in 1865. Kjøge Mini-By Laug (the Mini-Town Guild) decided in 1987 to build a historically correct model of the town from that year. In 1994 the first house was build and placed on the area. In total the Mini-Town will have 1000 houses. Actual (2011) 336 houses are build and with a speed of approximate 35 houses per year, there are still quite a few years to go, before the Mini-Town is complete.
The town is being built to a scale of 1 to 10 and the year 1865 has been chosen for the model town, because all properties in Køge were surveyed from 1863 to 1865 and an exact map was drawn.
We are given enormous help by the local archives, Køge Byhistoriske Arkiv, which has a vast selection of old drawings, photographs and descriptions of the old buildings as well as the milieu in the streets. Køge Museum and our local Town Planning Office are also very helpful. Finally, by personal inspection, we are able to see many of the real houses in Køge Town.
The supporting organization, Friends of the Kjøge Mini-Town, which was founded in 1990, build the houses.
The organization has nearby 700 members from which more than 100 members are active in building the town. Members join various specialist groups.
People in the historical group go to the archives for information. Having done their paper work they pass on the information to the people who make the drawings of the houses. Copies of these drawings go to the people who build the houses and the people who cut the windows and doors etc.
We also have groups who produce bricks and tiles of various types. They work in a workshop where a kiln is installed for firing their huge production.
Four ships are moored in our harbour. The original yacht “De 4 brødre af Marstal” was built in 1793 and was sailing until 1943 between the Scandinavian countries and countries bordering the Baltic Sea.
All members are working on a voluntary basis and are not paid for their work. Kjøge Mini-Town is an independent institution supported by trust funds, local firms, private individuals and Friends of Kjøge Mini-Town.
Picnic areas with barbecue facilities are available within our area. Visitors are welcome to bring their own food and beverages.
